Kenyans warned over unregistered real estate agents

The Estate Agents Registration Board (EARB) has raised concerns over the growing number of individuals and firms operating as estate agents without proper registration, warning that the practice is unlawful and punishable by law.

In a public notice dated Friday, the board reminded all individuals and companies involved in real estate transactions that they must be legally registered with EARB to conduct business.

The board emphasized that those who meet the legal requirements are issued a Registration Certificate and an Annual Practising Certificate, which must be renewed every year.

The board further urged members of the public to be cautious and verify the credentials of estate agents before engaging their services.

“Consumers are advised to require that the Estate Agents they engage provide registration certificates and Annual Practising Certificates issued by the board,” the notice stated.

To facilitate the verification process, EARB has provided a list of registered estate agents on its official website, www.estateagentsboard.or.ke.

Registration status

The public can also confirm an agent’s registration status through Gazette Notices or by making direct inquiries with the board.

EARB cautioned that those who engage in estate agency without proper registration are in violation of the law and could face legal consequences.

“Persons practicing Estate Agency without Registration are doing so illegally and risk prosecution. Such should be reported to the board,” the statement read.

Established in 1987, EARB is responsible for regulating the real estate sector in Kenya by ensuring professionalism and ethical conduct among estate agents.

Over the years, the board has worked to protect property owners, buyers, and sellers by enforcing compliance within the industry.

In addition to its regulatory role, the board provides training and resources to enhance professionalism. This includes pre-registration training programs aimed at equipping aspiring real estate agents with the necessary skills and knowledge for legal and ethical practice.
